Hints are provided automatically at the beginning of the game in order to give players a head start. There currently isn't a way to turn hints on or off.
However, you can also receive small hints during later levels by tapping on a creature blocking your path. When you tap on a creature, you will be able to see a couple of words describing the creature that can be used to collect it.
